Opera-18-Browser-Desktop-Android-Tablet

Opera has not only moved to the Google browser layout engine last year with version 15, it also slimmed down by dropping a number of much-loved features. The earlier ubiquitous bookmarks bar feature has been brought back in the latest Opera version 19. A dedicated bookmarks menu is still missing in action, but the bookmarks bar should help you quickly drop your favorite websites and bookmarklets for quick access from the bar. Turn on the bookmarks bar in the settings. Opera’s own add-on gallery is maturing – 700 and growing up fast. The extensions also get inline installs and a...

Hot on the heels of their announcement of a 50GB gift to anyone who downloaded their iOS app, Box has now announced a new service called Box Notes. Box Notes enables you to write notes and anything that comes to mind, and have it saved directly into your Box cloud storage account, with that newly minted 50GB to help you keep it. In a service rather similar to Google Docs, Box Notes allows you to open up a blank note and begin typing whatever is on your mind. It will then be synced across your computers, smartphones, and tablets. A...

10 More Video Games That Changed The World

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

retro-games-console

We previously listed 10 video games that have changed the world. Or, at the very least, changed the world of gaming as we know it. Which to hardcore gamers is the same thing. These titles can legitimately be classed as game-changers. Which is a rather apt description given the subject matter. The problem is that a list of 10 video games just wasn’t enough. The original article, which you can, and should, read before this one, garnered dozens of comments, many of which included suggestions for other video games that should be named as key to the evolution of gaming....

4 Things I Hate About Modern RPGs

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

Classic RPGs

Is the RPG genre going downhill? That may be a bit of an extreme suggestion, but there are definitely a few things that make this genre of games a hassle to deal with sometimes. I grew up during the age of Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI, and other greats. I was spoiled. I love playing these games, but I have a burning resentment towards four things that probably won’t be going away any time soon. In this article, let’s talk about them. Unskippable cutscenes Cutscenes are awesome. Be it those additional CGs that they added to the PlayStation...

The Pros & Cons Of Running Windows 8 On Your Desktop & Mobile

windows 8 pc and mobile phone

Windows 8 isn’t just about Windows anymore. It’s integrated with Microsoft’s online services, including Bing, SkyDrive, Outlook.com, Skype, Xbox Music, and even Office — although the Office apps are sold separately. These services technically work best when you use Windows Phone 8 along with Windows Phone, just as an iPhone works best with a Mac. But most of Microsoft’s services are actually cross-platform, so you can easily use an Android phone or iPhone along with a Windows 8 PC and not miss out on much. Windows 8 with Windows Phone 8 If you use the new Windows 8-style apps, you’ll...

Not The Wrong Site: “Office Online” Is The New Name For Web-Based Word and Excel

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

office-online

Technology’s most prolific name-changer is at it again. The Verge is reporting that Microsoft will change the name for its online Word and Excel services, to “Office Online”. The switch follows a recent announcement that their cloud storage service “Skydrive” will soon be named “OneDrive” – a change prompted by a dispute with British broadcaster BSkyB. If you’re confused, you’re not alone: the brand history of Microsoft’s online office suite isn’t exactly straight forward. “Microsoft Office Live” was the company’s first online office suite, designed to challenge Google Docs (which itself has since become Google Drive, but that’s another story)....

Oxyphenbutazone. That’s about as high as you can go in Words With Friends – a single word worth 1674 points. That’s either an awesome feat of linguistic prowess, or just plain cheating – you be the judge. The good news is that Words With Friends is not the only game in town. You could go with another Zynga game like Scramble With Friends, but today I’m here with two very different word games for Android, both from indie developer concreterose. Don’t let the lo-fi graphics fool you: Each is glorious in its own way. Word Weasel If you’re into fast-paced word...

Retailers will keep liquidating last year’s stock until at least Spring. That means it’s a great time for deals. This week we’ve found a slightly discounted Nexus 5, which rarely shows up with any kind of discount. We’ve also got a cheap Ultrabook, an excellently priced Haswell CPU, a criminally priced mirrorless camera and a great Viewsonic monitor. Smartphone Users Who wants a discounted Nexus 5? Who Needs Dropbox and SkyDrive? Host Your Own Files With FTPbox

boxes

If you had a million dollars, would you rather store it in a safe at someone’s house or at your own place. It’s nice to have control of your own assets. Why wouldn’t the same be true for data? The whole reason most people choose to host a website or blog on their own web hosting account is because there’s more of a sense of “ownership” than if you’re hosting pages you’ve written on a site like WordPress.org or on Blogger. The beauty of having a web hosting account is that it’s basically a perfect file storage location for any...

“It’s like LEGO and Castaway combined.” That’s how I was first introduced to Minecraft and, at the time, it was an extremely accurate description. Since then, Minecraft has evolved into something even greater, warranting a quick overview guide for anyone who still doesn’t know what it is. In essence, Minecraft lets you be a digital architect. We’re almost five years past its first public release, and Minecraft is still one of the most played games in the world. Is Minecraft overhyped? Maybe, but there’s no denying the fact that people have used it to create massive, sprawling worlds that can...
