7 Rugged Bluetooth Speakers To Bring On Your Next Outdoor Adventure

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST

Music goes well with a campfire, and is one of the few forms of electronic entertainment that’s acceptable on a backpacking excursion. All you need is a phone or MP3 player – and a set of speakers. The latter requirements tend to be problematic. Lots of small, portable speakers exist, but most of the models you’ll find on sale at your local retail store are designed to sit on a night stand rather than a fallen tree. There are, however, some portable Bluetooth speakers that can meet the challenge of the great outdoors. Braven BRV-1 ($125) The big, bad Braven...

WriteRoom for iOS: A Minimal, Productive Text Editor for iPhone & iPad

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

There are those who say you can’t get any real work done on an iPad, but I’m not so sure. For me, WriteRoom ($4.99) provides the perfect environment to write wherever I am. Sure, tapping at a non-tactile screen instead of a keyboard isn’t the most appealing of text input methods, but WriteRoom actually goes some way toward closing the gap between tablets and laptops with some empowering software tweaks. I wrote this whole article using WriteRoom, just to see if I really could get some serious work done on a tablet. Turns out I could. Distraction-Free Writing Writeroom is a...

VMWare Fusion 6 Opens Windows On Your Mac

While Apple provides Bootcamp, a built-in OS X application for installing Windows on your Mac, the virtualization program VMWare Fusion 6 ($59.99) allows users to run Windows without restarting their Mac, which Bootcamp requires. This is why we have added Fusion 6 to our Best of Mac page. On occasion I use or test Windows only programs like Dragon Naturally Speaking, MarkdownPad, and DesignPro 5, and I can easily do so by firing up VMWare Fusion and it, in turn, launches Windows inside a separate window on my Mac desktop. There’s little or no hassle using Fusion, and in fact the only learning...

Control iTunes & Apple TV From The Palm Of Your Hand With Remote

If I’m honest with myself, I would have to admit I’m quite a lazy person. If I’m lying on the sofa, I don’t like to get up unless I absolutely have to, and anything that involves using energy is something which I generally don’t like doing. Think of how lazy Garfield the cat is and then multiply that by 100. Then you will have a rough idea of what I am like. So when I took a closer look at Remote, a free app provided by Apple, I realised I could take my laziness to new heights. Remote is an...

Think Twice about Buying a PlayStation: How Getting Hacked Made My PSN Content Useless

ps4-shattered

I'm a strong advocate for digital purchases, and I really don't have objections about DRM: I'm not trying to cheat anyone, and I understand I need to authenticate devices. I’ll even accept “always online” DRM as long as it actually works (I’m talking to you, SimCity). I think borrowing games is only marginally better than pirating, and I would never buy used games unless they were out of print. It irks me when a digital version of a game can’t be bought cheaper than a physical copy, but I do it anyway because discs can be scratched or stolen. I believe...

There's your email, but there's also probably some combination of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and maybe an RSS reader demanding your attention. Really, any place where you don't...

Steam Introduces User Reviews For Improved Game Ratings

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST

steam-reviews

Steam has just launched Steam Reviews, a system for users to rate the games they’ve played, much like Amazon’s review system for products. Users can review any game that they’ve played in Steam, even if not purchased through the Steam Store. Included in your review will be the amount of time that you’ve played the game, which Steam hopes will work as a deterrent for people who would otherwise leave malicious reviews of games they haven’t played for more than 2 minutes. Users can then upvote or downvote specific reviews, allowing for the more helpful reviews to rise to the...
