crowdsourcing

In the past, if you were dissatisfied with the service in a restaurant or shop, you would withhold the tip, or demand to speak to the manager for a stern talking to. But now, if you are dissatisfied with the service anywhere, you would write a review on Yelp. Yelp has gradually become the place to write scathing reviews of how the waiter sneezed in your soup, or how the shop owner tried to sell you something off the back of a truck. But other similar recommendation sites have sprung up in its shadow, which also serve the same purpose....

Four Technologies That Are Bringing One-Hour Shipping to Life

shipping

Earlier this month, Amazon rolled out its new Prime Now shipping service to a few zip codes in Manhattan. If you’re a Prime subscriber and live in the serviced areas, the service promises one hour delivery of packages to Prime users for about seven dollars — alternately, you can get packages shipped in two hours for free. The service currently supports about 250,000 of the most popular items, and services only a small area. How does the service work? Amazon has achieved this incredible feat through a combination of impressive logistics (which we’ll go into in a moment), and limited...

Weekend Project: Build a Giant LED Pixel Display

Posted: 02 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST

led pixel display - featured

I love LED pixels: bright, easy to control, cheap, and so versatile. My last project was an Ambilight TV backlight, but generally I’m just in love with intelligent lighting. Today, we’ll be turning them into a big pixel display that can be hung on the wall of your office; either to serve a useful purpose, or just look incredibly pretty. This is a relatively simple project that just takes time to construct, but can be a little fiddly when connecting the strands of LEDs. The basic idea is laying down strips of LED pixels in snake pattern on the back of the...

In between Star Wars figures and Transformers trucks, my greatest love as a child was LEGO. I would make multi-coloured spaceships, intricately designed houses, castles…the beauty of LEGO is that it is only limited by your imagination. Now as an adult, I am beginning to rediscover my love for LEGO, thanks to the resurgence in popularity for the company, and its re-emergence in popular culture (The LEGO movie or The LEGO Star Wars edition, anyone!). This has led me to start intensive LEGO research before I embark on my new hobby. Such as these 8 sites. Build With Chrome We have already talked about...

How To Sync Your Google Calendar Appointments With Windows 8

When it comes to calendars, Google and Microsoft just don’t get along. If you’ve tried to add your Google Calendar account to the Windows 8 default calendar app, you know what I’m talking about – there’s no way to log in. There used to be, and some users still have it working, but if you’re settings things up now, you won’t even find an option to log into Google. Microsoft’s official advice, essentially, is to stop using Google calendar and migrate to their service: Outlook.com. This is a shame. Seeing a summary of your upcoming appointments on the Start screen...

How Upvote Systems Have Damaged Online Communities

Posted: 02 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST

upvote-systems

The upvote has taken over the modern web. No matter how it’s implemented — likes, retweets, shares, or reblogs — it’s all based on the same concept: social approval. But as far as online interactions are concerned, the upvote has been the web’s greatest mistake. To be clear, fruitful discussions can still sprout in the midst of online reputation systems, but there’s no doubt that these systems have had a real effect on how people view each other and connect with one another. And in a lot of cases, the results point to the death of authenticity between users. Self-Worth...

android-tv

Long live the king, sneered Android TV as it threw Google TV off the cliff and into a herd of stampeding wildebeests. Well, not exactly, but Android TV is replacing the now-five-year-old Google TV. And it’s not just an update — it’s a complete remake. Only a tiny fraction of Google TV devices will be updated to Android TV. For all intents and purposes, Android TV is a new beast. Apple is the world’s richest company and among its most loved brands (though it can’t keep growing forever). But recent headlines make us wonder: is Apple finally losing its sheen? Are the fanboys disappearing? Journalist Walt Mossberg explains the phenomenon of Apple’s legions of followers in a post titled, “It’s Not a Church, It’s Just an Apple Store“: The biggest tech religion is the Church of Apple, with countless blogs defending its every move, regardless of whether it’s a good one. Apple cultists are often quick to question not just the judgment, but the motives and personal character of anyone who...

What Can Government Security Agencies Tell From Your Phone’s Metadata?

Posted: 02 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

mobile-metadata-security

We talk a lot about metadata, especially since the revelations about how much of it the NSA is collecting. For the most part, it doesn’t sound that bad that they’re able to see those things—if they can see when you made a call, but can’t hear what you said, is it such a big deal? What Is Metadata? Before we get started, let’s set the groundwork and make sure we know exactly what metadata is. As you might gather from the name, it’s data about data—information about information.
