Simplenote Launches Official Android App For Easy Note-Taking

Simplenote-Official-Client-For-Android-Play-Store

Finally, the long wait is over! Simplenote, one of our favourite note-taking apps, has released a free official client for Android, which is similar to the one that has been on the iOS App Store for a while now. Till now, Simplenote users on Android have had to use third-party apps like Fetch Notes, but the official free app obviously works better and looks more like the web version. You can create a new account or hook up an existing one, and in a surprise twist, Simplenote has announced that there is no need to have an account at all...

5 Websites For Every Portable Application On The Web

Posted: 12 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT

portable

You already know that some applications offer portable or “soft” installations, but don’t you wish there was some place on the Internet where you could find any portable application? Although few, the good news is that there are some! Portable applications are incredibly useful. If you’re someone who is constantly carrying around a flash drive, you should always have a few of your favorite portable applications (or even a portable application suite) on it. I’ve found that portable applications are just as useful for a wide variety of uses — like when you’re setting up synchronized folders. I have a folder...

Studying-Student

The Internet is a wonderful resource for students, but these Chrome extensions can make the process of finding, marking up, organizing, and citing information a million times easier. Many students — myself included — keep a bunch of websites bookmarked, due dates written on random papers, and spend too many hours on Facebook. That ends today. With these Chrome extensions you’ll be focused and ready for pumping out some amazing research papers. We’ve covered a few tools like this before, like Diigo and Google Drive, but I’ll be going through four of the extensions that help me out the most as a...

Rome II: Total War Review And Giveaway

The Second Punic War killed my interest in fiction. Tolkein’s fantastical Battle Of Helm’s Deep seems but a minor skirmish compared to the Battle of Lake Trasimene, where Hannibal managed to hide his entire army, surprise the Romans, and drive them into the lake, killing an estimated 15,000 with less than 2,500 causalities of his own. My mind can’t begin to comprehend what such a fight might have looked like, or the desperate thoughts that must have risen in Roman men forced to choose between drowning in their armor or dying on a Carthaginian spear. Surprisingly, most games abstract this...

Can You Really Be Anonymous Online?

Posted: 12 Sep 2013 11:20 AM PDT

featured-anonymous

We all have things we’d rather not tell the world about — whether that be a flagrant disregard for copyright law, a penchant for specialist videos, or a desire to simply stay out of Big Brother’s ever-probing eye. Whatever the reason, I think it’s about time we clear up a few things about anonymity online — and answer once and for all, whether it’s really possible. We’ve already tackled the topic of why email can never be secure from government surveillance, but I think  it is worth tackling the Internet as a whole. If you’d rather watch than read —...

Google Plus Now Offers More Powerful Image Editing For Chrome Users

google-plus-editor

Google has just announced powerful new photo editing features for all Google Plus users. The features were developed by the team behind Snapseed, the excellent Google-owned image editor we’ve previously reviewed. Snapseed users will recognize many of the new controls, which are identical right down to the icons used: Filters such as Vintage, Drama, Retrolux and B&W can be applied via the browser, as can frames and tone adjustments. Even Snapseed’s excellent Selective Adjust feature has been implemented, allowing you to tweak specific areas of your photo without having to make complicated selections. Here’s a video from Google showcasing the...

Don’t Be A Fender Bender: 5 Driving Simulators That Teach Road Safety

5 Driving Simulators That Teach Road Safety

Online car simulator programs are for entertainment and education purposes only. After all, the arrow keys are hardly a steering wheel. They cannot teach you how to drive. But they can give you a feel of the basics…like staying on the right side of the lane and parking properly among other things. Some simulations as we will see, also teach you the proper safety measures and important road manners. I was the fender-bender in the family. Jittery hands and a nervous disposition. But I still learnt to drive after guzzling a few gallons of fuel. I always wished that I...

Opera Releases Coast: A Web Browser Specifically For The iPad

For a different type of mobile web browser experience, Opera released this week a new iPad app, called Coast (Free), that focuses on swipe-gesture controls, home screen bookmarks and internet search, featuring a cool, uncluttered design. Opera’s Coast groups webpages front and center, with very little distracting buttons or a menu bar. It brings reminders of Google’s classic search homepage with nothing more than a single search box. If you know how to navigate the web, there’s little to figure out when it comes to using Coast. The app opens with a set of bookmarked website icons, including Google+, YouTube,...

The 5 Best Office Chairs You Can Buy Right Now

Posted: 12 Sep 2013 08:01 AM PDT

bestofficechairheader

A good chair is an office worker’s best friend. While many people scoff at spending more than a hundred bucks on a place to sit, those who sit up to eight hour day after day often come to appreciate what a higher budget allows. The best office chairs are more comfortable, more ergonomic and more durable than anything you’ll find at Walmart. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth, as an expensive chair that falls apart is worthless (and such traps do exist). Fortunately, the best office chairs in the market are just a click...

3 Hilarious Giant Bomb Quick Looks For Games You Will Never Play

Posted: 12 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT

quick-looks

GiantBomb.com is, without question, my favorite video game website (besides our content at MakeUseOf, of course). While other sites are focused on reviews and news, Giant Bomb locks in on the lighter side of gaming with some amazing video content (although they still put out some more traditional content). When I think of Giant Bomb’s videos, the first that comes to mind is the Quick Looks. In these, the crew sits and plays a section of the game for our enjoyment. Generally, when I watch these, I prefer to watch videos for games I will never play. I don’t want...

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, news, favorite websites, Dropbox, Google Drive, Gmail…. are you out of breath yet? This is just a fraction of the services an average user deals with on a daily basis. How do we do it? The hard way. OneFeed attempts to bring all of these together under one roof. Similar to what Stipple does for photos, OneFeed tries to do for your entire online presence. Chris briefly mentioned OneFeed in his recent post about 9 ways to customize the new tab page in Chrome, but the service warrants a deeper look, especially since the service is...

As expected, Apple introduced the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c at its product release event this week. iPhone 5s now comes in two new colors, gold and silver (in addition to the standard black model), and its internal makeup includes a A7 processor with a 64-bit architecture, a fingerprint identity sensor, a faster iSight camera, and a M7 coprocessor designed to measure motion data for the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass.
