These Unofficial Fan-Made Films Are Surprisingly Good [Stuff to Watch]

stuff-to-watch-fan-made

The difference between a good remake and a bad remake is that the good remakes are made by people who actually want to make them. Despite their traditionally shoddy nature, this logic often applies to fan-creations too. Who better to breach copyright than someone who really knows, loves and respects the intellectual property in question? Nobody, that’s who. From Half-Life to Doctor Who, here are a selection of the best fan-made films on the net. Half-Life: Raise the Bar Fans have waited long enough for Half-Life 3 that they’re starting to make their own films based on the franchise, though on...

Avengers (And Bugs) Assemble In Marvel’s Run Jump Smash!

Marvel_Run_Jump_Smash_Avengers_iOS_Android_Kids_Endless_Runner

Ever since Canabalt first hit screens, developers have been looking to capitalize on the endless runner fad. And each game brings something new to the table, but usually not enough to make a dent. There are odd exceptions like Small Fry, but more often than not, a new endless runner is nothing to write home about. Coupled with the fact that superhero games are traditionally quite boring and badly made, I had little hope from Marvel’s Run Jump Smash ($0.99). But was I in for a surprise! Avengers Assemble! Run Jump Smash features characters from The Avengers movie: Captain America, Iron...

5 Mistakes You Should Avoid When Buying A New Laptop

The laptop has, for many people, become the only home computer needed. Fast, yet portable, they offer the best of both worlds, and can be had for $500 (or less). Their lure is understandable. Yet a laptop is also more complex and, compared to a desktop, far less flexible. A desktop user unhappy with a monitor, keyboard or mouse can simply replace it, but laptop buyers have no options. This means picking the right system is both more important, yet also more difficult. Here’s what to look out for if you’re ready to open your wallet. Going Too Big –...

Wish you could display your photos in their full-sized beauty on Instagram? Although iPhones offer a square shooting mode for Instagram addicts, not every photograph looks great in that aspect ratio. A shot of a waterfall might fit best into a vertical frame, while a landscape scene always looks better in landscape view. Some Instagram clients such as #NoCrop allow you to upload horizontal or vertical photos, but that reduces their size. Now you can use the grid view on your Instagram timeline to upload stunning, high-resolution pictures. New to Instagram? Here are a few great tips for Instagram newbies. How To Create Beautiful & Shareable Images From Text Easily

Posted: 17 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST

images-featured.png

According to numerous analyses, images do better on social networks. They’re more likely to be clicked, more likely to be shared, and sometimes, they’re even more likely to be seen. Social networks such as Facebook and Google+ generate nice thumbnails for you when sharing links, but these are not as impressive as actual images. Other networks, such as Twitter, don’t make your life this easy, and don’t show an image at all unless you add one specifically. And yet, most of us can’t (or won’t) conjure images out of thin air every time we want to share a link. It’s...

Is the lack of a working official Instagram app for Windows Phone ruining your photo sharing? This is a problem you can easily solve – in an “Instance” … this ad-supported app is free, although you can also pay $1.49 for an ad-free version. Why Use an Instagram Client? Despite the fact that the majority of Windows Phone devices pack serious camera hardware, Instagram has been painfully slow coming to the platform. Currently, an official beta app is available, but this is short on video upload capability (although it is still very good). In the meantime, several third party apps have...

Kickstarter Was Hacked: Change Your Password

Posted: 17 Feb 2014 06:30 AM PST

kickstarter-hacked

Kickstarter revealed this Saturday that they had suffered a data breach on Wednesday that compromised significant amounts of user data. They are stressing that credit card information was not stolen, except for two individuals, but they are still recommending that users change their passwords just to be safe. The leaked information includes usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords. Since the passwords were encrypted, it would take a particularly malicious hacker to figure out your password, but the easier your password is, the more likely that the hackers would be able to crack it. That’s why there...

If you keep a journal or diary on one of the several online life logs  or software journaling applications, you also might be interested in publishing your secret thoughts in form of a book. The process of self-publishing is easier than you think (start with our Guide to Self Publishing). If the journaling software you use can export your content as PDF, sites like LuLu.com or Blurb.com can turn your uploaded PDF into an actual book for a fairly affordable price. I recently received my first self-published book of journal entries that I started in 2011, based on using the popular...

Wirelessly outputting your device’s audio and video streams could turn any HDMI-equipped television into a full-fledged desktop or streaming media center. But not all Miracast adapters (the technology which allows display mirroring on Android) offer the same performance or reliability.
