Do You Really Need a Surge Protector? Posted: 09 Aug 2013 01:45 PM PDT ![]() Back when I didn’t know any better, I thought “surge protector” was synonymous with “power strip,” and I thought “power strip” was just a fancy multi-plug extension cord. Brasero vs. K3b: Top 2 Linux Disc Burning Utilities Posted: 09 Aug 2013 01:15 PM PDT ![]() Although discs are slowly becoming obsolete and being replaced by simple transfers or downloads over the Internet, there are still plenty of reasons for burning or copying some discs. In some cases, your Internet connection may not be sufficient enough to download the files you want. For example, distributing CDs/DVDs of Linux distributions is easier than telling computer-illiterate people to visit a website, download a large file, and burn it to a disc themselves. In any case, you need a trusty burning utility to do the job, and Brasero and K3b are your top choices. Brasero I’ve covered Brasero in... Posted: 09 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT ![]() Blu Products just released the Blu Dash 4.5, an unlocked quad core Android 4.2 smartphone for $139.99. For budget devices, it offers great value: The phone features all the components of a modern smartphone, and despite its relatively minuscule 512 megabytes of RAM, it runs pretty smoothly. But was it worth the money and how does it compare to a $350 Nexus 4? Evaluation Criteria I purchased the Blu Dash 4.5 for my father. He needed a modern, disposable and inexpensive alternative to a regular cellular phone with a somewhat large screen for his deteriorating eyesight. His requirements were not particularly steep:... How To Troubleshoot & Repair A Broken Laptop Posted: 09 Aug 2013 10:29 AM PDT ![]() Laptops tend to have a rather short lifetime. They are outdated within weeks of being released, they are notoriously hard to upgrade or repair, and by nature they are subject to gradual decay or fatal accidents. Once damage has been done, repairs tend to be only slightly less expensive than getting a brand new model. These very unfortunate conditions — not just for laptops, but most other electronic devices — cause mountains of electronic waste. Some laptop issues, however, are often easier to repair than you would expect. This brief troubleshooting guide highlights the most likely damages, explores how to... Nuts About Photography? 6 Tips To Use Google Maps With Your Camera Posted: 09 Aug 2013 08:26 AM PDT ![]() Google has probably done less for the mass effect of photography than Facebook (the acquisition of Instagram tipped the balance), but the contribution has been nothing short of the word "generous". You can connect with the top photographers on Google+, and use Picasa to organize all your and geotag your photos. Google also has the interfaces that allow the really creative among us to experiment with things like hyperlapse photography and create stunning visuals. In a nice little update, Google also introduced Views, a fledgling but hoping to be big community of panoramic image enthusiasts. Singing ditties for Google though... AIM Blast: Group Messaging For AOL Instant Messenger Posted: 09 Aug 2013 07:32 AM PDT ![]() I don’t think you or I need to look at any official statistics to come to the conclusion that AOL Instant Messenger has been on a bit of a slope for the past few years. Skype is the messaging client of this decade, and AIM simply cannot (and eventually will cease to) keep up. Skype does everything that AIM can do, and usually even better. However, some people (like myself) still prefer to use AIM because features like voice and video chat aren’t important to us. I’m still of the opinion that AIM is a great client for IMing by text. One... Read the full article: AIM Blast: Group Messaging For AOL Instant Messenger |
